St. Mary's Chapel

St. Mary’s Chapel draws from the barns and agricultural buildings of the surrounding eastern Ohio landscape.

A white-oak timber frame, made by local Amish craftsmen, gives the chapel its structure and interior character. Limestone and cedar shingles wrap the exterior, bringing familiar regional materials to the building.

Large concealed doors open one side of the chapel completely to the surrounding pines and valley, allowing the enclosed room to become an open-air gathering place.

Familiar forms, local materials, and straightforward construction give the chapel a quiet presence in the landscape.
